What are Life Transitions?

Throughout our lives we go through many changes or transitions. We face both anticipated transitions and unanticipated transitions. These changes can feel stressful and overwhelming and in some cases leads to thoughts of self-doubt, and an increase in symptoms of anxiety or depression.

Anticipated Transitions

Anticipated transitions are changes that are planned and feel like part of a natural life cycle.

Some examples include:

-starting a new career

-starting or graduating from college

-getting married

-moving to a new city

Even though you are excited and planing for this change, it can still feel overwhelming and increase your anxiety.

How can therapy help when I am going through an anticipated transition?

A mental health therapist is a great person to include in your support system when you are going through major changes. Throughout your therapy sessions, we can help you identify both short and long term goals associated with this change. Together, we will also be able to keep track of any symptoms of anxiety or depression that may arise and discuss helpful and healthy coping skills.

Unanticipated Transitions

These types of life changes are unplanned and do not follow any particular time line that you had expected.

Examples of these include:

-COVID-19

-illness or injury

-death of a loved one

-getting fired from your job

These types of transitions tend to feel much more stressful than anticipated changes since we do not see them coming and cannot actively plan or prepare for them.

How can therapy help when I am going through an unanticipated transition?

During times like these, we often experience uncomfortable emotions which can feel overwhelming. Sometimes we may experience negative thoughts about ourselves or our lives. Attending therapy can help you process how your life has been impacted by these types of events. We strive to provide a safe space for you to express how you feel and will guide you through this transition.
