Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
What is KAP?
Ketamine has been used as a treatment option for depression and other mental health conditions for many years. While it is most commonly associated with relieving symptoms of depression, it has also shown promise in helping with anxiety and PTSD. Although ketamine is not FDA-approved for treating mental health conditions it is frequently and safely used off-label, like many other medications. One of its unique advantages is its rapid action; many people report feeling relief, sometimes even during the first session, particularly when struggling with suicidal thoughts. Typically, a series of sessions is recommended to address mental health issues, but ketamine can also be used more flexibly in therapy. When combined with psychotherapy, ketamine can create a powerful synergy, accelerating the healing process.
How Does KAP Work?
Ketamine works by changing how certain chemicals in the brain function, by enhancing neuroplasticity, and by promoting the growth of new neural connections. This neurobiological impact allows for more effective psychotherapy, as clients can process traumatic memories and emotions with greater ease and insight.
By combining ketamine's biochemical effects with the therapeutic alliance, KAP provides a holistic approach to mental wellness, offering hope and relief to those who have not found success with conventional treatments.
