Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Letters

Support You Can Count On — From Your Therapist and Your Companion

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) provide calming companionship and emotional relief for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health challenges. If you find that the presence of your animal helps you cope and feel more secure, an ESA letter may offer important legal protections and support your overall well-being.

What Is an ESA Letter?

An ESA letter is a clinical document written by a licensed mental health provider that verifies your need for an emotional support animal as part of your treatment plan. It is not a prescription for a service animal, but rather a recognition that your animal provides therapeutic benefit.

An ESA letter may help you:

  • Request reasonable accommodations for housing

  • Reduce pet-related fees in certain living situations

  • Advocate for your mental health needs with clarity and confidence

Who Qualifies?

You may be eligible for an ESA letter if you are:

  • Experiencing ongoing emotional or psychological distress

  • Currently working with a therapist or mental health professional

  • Able to demonstrate that your animal provides significant emotional support

Common conditions that may qualify include anxiety, PTSD, panic disorders, depression, and trauma-related symptoms.

What to Expect from the Process

At GC Counseling, we treat ESA evaluations with the same care and professionalism as any other mental health service. Here's what you can expect:

  • One clinical appointment with a licensed therapist to assess your needs

  • Thoughtful discussion about how your animal contributes to your emotional wellness

  • ESA letter provided within 3–5 business days if clinically appropriate

Please note: We do not bill insurance for ESA evaluations. This is a self-pay service, and your provider will discuss the fee and documentation with you prior to your appointment.
