• Yes—your privacy is a top priority at GC Counseling. Everything you share in therapy is kept confidential, in accordance with HIPAA and professional ethical standards. We create a safe, judgment-free space where you can speak openly, knowing your information is protected.

There are a few rare exceptions to confidentiality required by law, such as:

    • If there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else

    • If there is suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elderly person, or vulnerable adult

    • If records are subpoenaed by a court of law

Your therapist will review these limits during your first session and answer any questions you have. If you’re using insurance, only the necessary information (like diagnosis and session dates) is shared with your provider for billing purposes.

We’re always happy to clarify what confidentiality means and how your information is protected. Your trust matters to us.

  • GC Counseling is not a crisis center and we do not offer emergency services. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, please use one of the following resources to get the support you need right away:

    • Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room

    • Crisis Services of Western New York: Call (716) 834-3131 (24/7)

    • National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 (available 24/7)

    • Text “HOME” to 741741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor via the Crisis Text Line

Once you're safe, you’re welcome to reach out to us for ongoing support. Therapy can be a vital part of recovery, but it is not a substitute for emergency care.

  • Finding the right therapist is one of the most important parts of the therapy process. At GC Counseling, we take the time to understand your needs, preferences, and goals so we can match you with a clinician who’s a good fit—both clinically and personally.

When choosing a therapist, it’s helpful to consider:

    • The issues you want to work on (e.g., anxiety, trauma, life transitions, relationship challenges)

    • Whether you prefer a specific therapy style or approach (like CBT, EMDR, DBT, or Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy)

    • Your preferences for in-person vs. telehealth sessions

    • Scheduling availability that fits your lifestyle

    • Whether you feel comfortable and understood in the first session

You don’t have to figure it out alone—our team will guide you through the process. If it turns out your therapist isn’t the best fit, we’re happy to help you transition to someone else within our practice.

  • Yes! At GC Counseling, we offer both in-person and telehealth sessions to meet your needs, comfort level, and schedule.

    • In-person sessions are available at our office in Amherst, NY, in a private and welcoming setting.

    • Telehealth sessions are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform and can be accessed from anywhere in New York State.

Many clients choose telehealth for its flexibility, while others prefer the in-person experience—or a mix of both. We’re happy to help you choose the option that works best for you and can adjust as your needs change.

  • Your first therapy session at GC Counseling is all about getting to know you and creating a foundation for a supportive, collaborative relationship.

During this session, your therapist will:

    • Ask about what brought you to therapy and what you'd like to work on

    • Review your personal history, symptoms, and any current challenges

    • Go over confidentiality, consent, and how therapy works

    • Begin to set goals and discuss what success in therapy might look like for you

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous—many people do! There's no pressure to share everything right away. You set the pace, and we’ll meet you with compassion and care.

The first session is also a great opportunity for you to ask questions and see how it feels to work with your therapist. We’re here to make sure you feel safe, respected, and heard from the very beginning.
